If you’ve read my blogs, you know many focus on the challenges of sex work, such as unsafe clients and boundary issues. Some may view this as negative, but awareness is crucial. As a long-time advocate, I find it important to discuss both the good and the bad. Having been in the industry as a survivor sex worker, I now see clients more casually. What stands out are those who’ve remained for over a decade. They respect my time and boundaries, and I reciprocate their trust and privacy. These long-term connections demonstrate that even in this industry, mutual respect exists.

Many sex workers are unaware of their rights—I know because I once was too. I learned the hard way when clients took back money after a session or regulars promised to pay later and never did. It left me feeling humiliated and powerless.

Consent under agreed conditions matters. If payment is part of the agreement, refusing to pay undermines consent. Sex without valid consent isn’t a misunderstanding—it’s sexual assault.

Since sex work is decriminalised in Victoria, sex workers have legal protections like anyone else. You can report these incidents. Your visa status doesn’t change that.

Protect yourself. Trust your instincts. Ask for payment upfront. Knowing your rights is essential.

I worked in brothels in the early 2000s, and some of my best memories came from building community with my trans sisters. The work was financially rewarding, and we shared similar struggles, forming bonds that went beyond the job. At Pleasure Dome, trans women were in high demand, but jealousy and gossip sometimes created a toxic environment, rumours about hygiene, heath scare or character spread, affecting mental health and safety. Later, as a sex work advocate, I learned more about workplace rights and safety standards and these issues are legal matters and can be legally prevented. Despite challenges, brothel work taught me resilience, professionalism, and the value of sisterhood.
